How do we learn? Theories of multimedia learning. In order to maximize the process of learning, we need a better grasp of how cognitive load works. To understand the mayer’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning, there are three key components 1. Limited capacity, 2. Dual coding theory, 3. Active processing.
Cognitive load
There are three types of cognitive load which are intrinsic, extraneous, and germane load. Intrinsic load is an inherent matter which depends on an individual level and the subjects. For example, solving a complex cácelas problem is more difficult than the calculation like 10 + 10. This is when extraneous cognitive load becomes important. The way we present can increase and decrease the learning qualities, so by reducing extraneous cognitive load we can use more brain capacity for retention. Germane load is how we proceed our new information into long term memory.
As an international student who does not speak English as a first language, understanding cognitive load was very fascinating since it could be helpful for English learning or any type of learning. We have limited capacity for gaining new information. I have realized recently that as I try to understand new information in non native language, it takes so much brain capacity to comprehend due to a language barrier (FoLSE which stands for foreign language side effect indicates a temporary decline of thinking ability while a non proficient foreign language is being used.)
FoLSE might be a slightly irrelevant topic with cognitive load, but I thought there might be some correlation between cognitive overload and FoLSE.
One of the principles that resonated with me was the personalization principle. I often have a hard time understanding academic questions when the words are presented formally, so it’s interesting how conventional language can enhance the learning methods.
My topic for the screencast was learning English. I wanted to explain a bit more but it is very unfortunate that my iPad allowed me to record only three minutes. My focus was the correlation between cognitive load and non native language. I tried to minimize the images and slides.
